  • The 1964 Chevy Chevelle was essentially a smaller version of the Impala.
  • The base model was the 300 series and the top of the line model was the Malibu SS.
  • 1964 Chevelles acheived a maximum of 300 hp - but would quickly improve in that area.
  • 1964 Chevy Chevelles were produced in two door and four door styles - more than 76,000 Chevelles total were produced.
  • The 1964 Chevelle had a new style A-frame platform and a double wishbone suspension on the front and live-axle rear suspension.
  • 1965 Chevelles added the option for a limited edition package known as the Z-16 which had a 375 hp engine, power assisted steering, anti-roll bars and a modified supsension - just over 200 of these cars were produced.
  • 1965 Chevelles with a 4 speed transmission had a much higher gear ratio than the 1964 Chevelles.
  • 1966 Chevrolet Chevelles came standard with the 396 engine which could produce up to 375 horsepower - 283 & 327 cubic inch engines were not offered.
  • 1966 Chevelles had stiffer springs and shocks to control handling.
  • In 1966 the Chevelle SS became known as the SS396 to reflect the larger standard engine.
  • The 1966 Chevelle came with dual hood scoops and a new roof line and bumpers.
  • 1966 4 door hardtop Chevelles were available.
  • 1967 Chevelles had front disc brakes standard.
  • 1967 Chevelles had a 3 speed automatic transmission added to the transmission choices.
  • 1967 Chevy Chevelles no longer had the option of the 375 horsepower engine.
  • The 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS was redesigned with the front of the vehicle stretched and the rear of the vehicle shortened.
  • 1968 Chevelles saw the 375 horsepower engine option added back into the mix.
  • 1968 Chevelles were the last year of the SS396 series - although it continued to be offered as an option package on the Chevelle.
  • 1968 Chevelle sales dropped around 20%.
  • 1968 was the only year for SS396 El Caminos.
  • 1969 Chevelles had the option of an SS 396 - which helped sales rebound to more than 86,000.
  • During the 1969 production year the 396 was increased to 402 cubic inches - a few Chevelles also came with 427 cubic inch engines.
  • Over 86,000 1969 Chevelles were produced.
  • 1969 Chevelles had a Super Sport option.
  • 1970 Chevelle sales fell nearly 40%.
  • 1970 Chevelles saw huge horsepower increases with options ranging from 350 hp to 450 hp.
  • The SS option on the 1970 Chevy Chevelle was limited to the Malibu series.
  • 1970 Chevelles with the 450 hp LS6 engine could go zero to 60 in just six seconds - making it the most powerful production muscle car built.
