- 1964 Ford Mustangs - introduced as 1965 models - had 3 engine options ranging from a 105 hp six cylinder up to a 271 hp V8.
- 1964 Mustangs were introduced as coupes and convertibles with long hoods, short trunks and later a 2+2 fastback body style was offered.
- 1964 Mustangs had many customizable options.
- 1965 Mustangs wer the first year for the fastback with slanted rear window lines and the first year for the Grand Touring - GT - Mustang.
- 1965 Mustangs engine options had an improved 6 cylinder and a carbureted V8 engine.
- The Shelby GT350 had 306 hp standard but could produce 360 hp with tuning - the Shelby came without a back seat and only in white.
- 1966 Mustangs had new interior color choices, material options and an overhauled guage cluster.
- 1966 Ford Mustangs had 289 V8 engine options that came in 2 and 4 barrel versions - the Shelby GT 350 was also still available.
- 1966 Mustangs Shelby GT350's had the option for a Paxton supercharger which increased the hp on the racing version up to 500 hp.
- 1967 Mustangs were redesigned and had elongated bodies, heavier sheet metal, concave tails, larger grills and a fastback roofline.
- The 1967 Mustang engine compartments were larger to allow for the optional 390 big block.
- 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 hp dropped to 290 hp - but a new GT500 was offered that produced 355 hp.
- In 1968 California Special Mustangs were produced for a limited time.
- The 1968 Ford Mustang had changes made to the grills and trim and the Shelby Mustang became known as the Shelby Cobra - a convertible was also available.
- 1968 Ford Mustangs had the additional options of a 427 cubic inch engine that produced 390 hp and a 428 Cobra Jet engine.
- In mid 1968 the For Mustang GT500 was replaced by the GT500 KR King of the Road.
- The 428 Cobra Jet had large valve heads, ram-air induction and was listed at 335 hp - it actually produced closer to 400 hp.
- 1969 Ford Mustangs were made longer and heavier and had new grills and lights.
- In 1969 the Ford Mustang became more powerful with the Boss 429 and Boss 302 engine options - the Boss 429 designed for Nascar racing and the Boss 302 designed for Z28 racing.
- In 1969 the Ford Mustang Grande made it's debut as the luxury Mustang model.
- In 1969 the Ford Mustang Mach 1 made it's debut and was designed for straight ahead racing - it had racing stripes, flat back hoods and three 428 Cobra Jet engine options - one being the Super Cobra Jet.
- In 1969 the Shelby Mustang became the luxury Mustang model.
- 1970 Ford Mustangs continue with the production of the Boss 429 and Boss 302.
- 1970 Mach 1 Mustangs with a 428 Cobra Jet engine were the best sellers.
- 1970 Mustangs were the first year for the 429 Cobra Jet with 370 hp - the Super Cobra Jet had 375 hp.
- 1970 Mustangs were the last year for Boss 429, Boss 302 and the Shelby Cobra - the 1970 Shelby Cobras were actually unsold 1969 models with minor cosmetic changes made.
